The Iredell County Commissioners meet at 6pm 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month.
BONUS: Great disovery in finding this link: it looks like we can *also* stream Commission meetings, for those of us who can’t get to downtown Statesville in the evenings. This portal also holds minutes of past meetings.
fyi: Five at-large members compose the Iredell County Commission. In even-numbered years, elections are held for 3 seats on the board, and the 2 candidates receiving the largest number of votes are given a 4-year term while the individual receiving the lesser amount receives a 2-year term. It’s worth noting that every 2024 commission candidate campaigned on changing this system to create 4-year terms for all commissioners; it does not appear this change has been implemented, to date.
The county commissioners appoint a Clerk to the Board and a County Manager. Iredell County operations, programs and activities are administered by the County Manager and team that includes Deputy County Manager, Assistant County Manager, and County Attorney. Here’s an organizational chart for Iredell County (from 2024); contact notes for some of the departments and services follow. The Iredell County website’s Government page offers more info.
Students in Iredell County access public education through the Iredell-Statesville Schools (ISS) district. Questions about schools in this district can be directed to ISS System staff; the ISS Board of Education meets at 6pm 2nd Monday of each month in Troutman.
There does not appear to be a live streaming option; some past meeting recordings are located on an ISS youtube site that’s a little haphazard so searching is tricky, but doable. Here’s current Board of Education membership for the Iredell-Statesville Schools system.
Iredell County Public Library has three branches and an online presence. Here’s contact info if you want to reach out to learn more about Iredell Friends of the Library.
Iredell County’s Cooperative Extension team is an outreach arm of NCSU and NC A&T, and includes county-specific staff as well as a regional network of Area Special Agents.
Iredell’s Sherriff’s Office has branches in Statesville and Mooresville, and a website for FAQs and staff directory. Our current Sherriff was initially elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2018 and 2022.
The District, Prosecutorial, and Superior Court identity for Iredell County is district 32, combined with our neighboring Alexander County. We have six District Judges serving Iredell including a Chief Judge. One recently re-elected District Judge just quit the bench. The Governor will name a replacement Iredell/Alexander District Court Judge to fill that seat until the next General Election in 2026. We seem to have two Superor Court Judges serving Iredell. Iredell’s District Attorney was first elected in 2008 and was re-elected in 2024 to her 5th term. Honestly, researching judicial offices proved pretty opaque. It appears the Iredell D.A. leads of team of 30 personnel (assistant DAs and clerks, etc.), although I’m not 100% sure I was understanding the way the site worked.
Hope this deeper dive into local officials helps. We’ll keep an eye on local opportunities to interact with these officials. Please share what you learn as you do your own dives. Keep the faith and Keep in touch.
